I was born when Truman was president. As a boy in the 50's, I was lucky and had a chance to try and do many adventurous things. At the same time I also learned to love things like: The history Walter Cronkite told me about; John Wayne, Randolph Scott and Rory Calhoun westerns; big band and Spike Jones music; TV's Beany & Cecil, Don Winslow of the Coast Guard, Soupy Sales, Ernie Kovacs, Yancey Derringer, and Uncle Miltie; books by James Michener and Louis L'Amour; and of course the Martin Mars flying boat, Sabot sailboats and Dewey Weber surfboards. Except for surfing, and the birth of my two children, I'd just as soon forget the 60's, thank you. In the 70's, I worked hard, achieved some success in the business world and wound up with more money than brains. But I had enough brains to quit smoking before my 30th birthday, and to make a lasting friendship with a cattle rancher who would change my life. In the 80's, I enjoyed the typical male midlife crisis, spent years working on a cattle ranch, went back to school, changed careers and used my good sense to quit drinking before I turned 40. In the 90's I shared life with a woman and helped her achieve a goal, and in so doing I found the work I was born to do and devoted myself to the betterment of people around me. In the first decade of the 21st Century, I ran the Boston Marathon, found the love of my life, have sailed more than 30,000 nautical miles along the West Coast and across oceans. Like it was for me so many years ago, I remain lucky and have a chance to try and do many adventurous things.
